Faces and Festivals! - Edinburgh Training and Conference Venue

Faces and Festivals

Beth with Peter AndreWhilst not a wild child when growing up in Markinch, Event Coordinator Beth certainly had her fair share of fun (and hard work!) before she joined us, travelling all over the UK to serve pizza at music festivals and also developing a fine skill in Spiderman face painting!

Having got the theory with both Business Management and Event Management qualifications at Fife College, Beth has also enjoyed extensive exposure to the world of events through some of those jobs that most of us would fancy having a go at!

In fact part of her HND involved creating and managing events, including taking on comedians, singers and dancers for a showcase evening at Pettycur Bay for Yorkhill children’s hospital. She also orchestrated a Great Gatsby Ball for the final year students and tutors, complete with Gatsby soundtrack, a candy buffet and then props such as fans, feathers, hats and various moustaches for guests to use in a temporary Photo Booth! That’s Beth in the photo with the DJ for the event and the car to match.

Beth was an event safety steward for G4S over 3 years, covering all the Hearts & Hibs football games at Tynecastle and Easter Road, as well as concerts at Hampden Park, varying from Bruce Springsteen at one end of the spectrum to Robbie Williams at the other  … complete with legions of fainting girls!

Beth with Gatsby CarAt T in the Park in Kinross, July 2011 and 2013, Beth was responsible for taking celebrities to and from radio and television interviews, and in the process met The Saturdays and Calvin Harris. She was also working at the Alhambra theatre in Dunfermline when Peter Andre was performing, hence the photo with the man himself.

Over the summer of 2013 Beth travelled to Aberdeen, Fife and Newcastle as an events instructor for Team Challenge Company, helping mostly with Family Fun days that included face painting as well as quad bikes, archery and bouncy castles. She became quite skilled at the face painting and amazingly it was the boys who were keen to have a new face featuring the likes of the Hulk or Spiderman, while a lot of the girls were too scared to have anything at all!

And then between April and September last year, Beth worked at music festivals across the UK, helping a friend with her Woodburns Pizza catering. She was at a whole bunch of festivals including Glastonbury, Belladrum, Rewind, Liverpool Sound City and Global Gathering. Beth says they were long, 16-hour days with set up and heavy lifting in all weathers so it was very tiring … but great fun!

After all that travelling and wild activity, Beth graduated last September and was very keen to pursue a role in conference organising, having done particularly well in that area at college. She is now thoroughly enjoying the day to day variation in event organisation here and particularly meeting new people every day. Just don’t ask her to give you a Ben 10 face paint – that character who can change into a multitude of aliens with a simple smack of his watch!
